The Carpathian Reformed Church Diaconal Center operates several social institutions: a soup kitchen, bakery, elderly home, a home for single mothers, and also maintains a disaster relief center and its associated accommodation, including care for war-injured, ‘returned’ soldiers. They organize children’s camps and activities, and maintain connections with several schools: currently, 800 schoolbags are being prepared for the start of the school year. Many families have been separated, and many young people have left the country, leaving many elderly people ‘orphaned’ by the war. Providing daily care for them in the home and their own residences presents a significant financial challenge. Daily power outages in Ukraine disrupt kitchen operations, summer cooling, and winter heating for those in care, requiring the use of generators, which adds extra costs. Beyond the home, they also provide daily care to an additional 173 people in the surrounding area.
