Obituary - Rev. Imre A. Bertalan

Rev. Imre A. Bertalan, 67, of Ligonier, died Tuesday, August 29, 2017 in Latrobe, PA. He was Chairman of the Board of the Kossuth Foundation when he passed away.

As a policy holder in the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America when it merged with GBU Beneficial Life, Rev. Bertalan was a member of the Kossuth Foundation from its inception in 2011. He also served as our host for Board Meetings that took place frequently at the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, PA.

He joined the board in 2015, and was elected Board Chair in January 2017. He was committed to the long-term vision of serving the Hungarian-American community across the country and to the recovery of the Kossuth House in Washington, DC to serve as the focal point for the organization.

Rev. Imre A. Bertalan

Rev. Bertalan was born October 4, 1949 in New Brunswick, NJ, son of the late Imre G. and Margaret Kosa Bertalan.

He was the executive director of Bethlen Communities since 1999 in Ligonier. He was an ordained clergy for the Hungarian Reformed Church of America and the Calvin Synod of the United Church of Christ. He was past president of the Rotary Club of Ligonier, and was a member of the Ligonier Valley Assoc. of Churches and the Ligonier Valley Ministerial Assoc. In addition to being very active in—and dedicated to—the Hungarian-American Community, he was a staunch supporter of the Ligonier community as a whole and an advocate for Ligonier High School sports teams.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Magdalene Ujvagi, five children: Sara (Jeff) Davis, Julia (Dylan) Bertalan, and Imre E. Bertalan, all of Toledo, OH, Magda (Jose) Bertalan of Madison, WI, and Margit (Brian) Bertalan of Fayetteville, NC, five grandchildren, and two sisters, Lillian (Michael) Bertalan of Schenectady, NY and Sarah Bertalan of New York, NY.

A service to celebrate Rev. Bertalan's life is being planned and will be held in Ligonier at a time and place to be announced.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Imre's memory be made to the Bethlen Communities, 125 Kalassay Drive, Ligonier, PA 15658.
