Language Program Announcement: Payment for Courses to Change from Donation-based to Tuition-based

The Kossuth Foundation Board of Directors has changed how its language program is funded. For the past several years the foundation has requested a voluntary donation from each student to help pay for the expenses of the program. Starting with the spring 2021 semester, the foundation will require the payment of tuition. This article focuses on the switch to tuition-based payment; the general announcement for the spring 2021 semester will be published in early December.

Why are we making this change?

The language program has grown significantly over the years, and it has been very time consuming to manage. It will be simpler to administer tuition payments.

Be assured that we are not trying to make a profit—after all, we are a non-profit organization. Any excess revenue will be used to support our charitable and educational programs or to support the Kossuth House as a community center for the Hungarian-American community.

How will it operate?

The course tuition will be $300 for a standard semester, which is 12-weeks with one 2.5-hour online session per week. (Tuition may be adjusted for different length semesters and for different amounts of class time.)

The spring 2021 semester will start on different days during the week of Monday, January 11, and it will be a standard semester.

The $300 tuition will be due and payable in full 1 week before the start of the semester. That is, tuition payments are due by Sunday, January 3. Those who have paid tuition by the deadline will be assigned to classes on January 4. In the class-assignment process, returning students will be given priority to continue with their previous groups.

Are there any special allowances?

Returning students who forget to make their tuition payment on time are still welcome to join the first session without enrolling if there remains room in the class, but payment will be required before the second session.

New students will have an opportunity to talk with one of our experienced teachers to ensure that they join the appropriate level of instruction. New students who are unsure whether this language-learning experience is right for them, are invited to participate in as many as two sessions without enrolling if there remains room in the class before deciding to commit to the semester, but payment will be required before the third session.

Tuition waivers will be available to those in financial hardship in exchange for a commitment to provide volunteer help in support of the language program or the Foundation.
