Kossuth Foundation Language Program Announcement and Guidelines – Fall 2020 Semester

Program Overview The Kossuth Foundation language program offers stimulating online evening or weekend classes at all levels of study. New and returning students are welcome. If you are uncertain about which class may be right for you, please contact us. All classes are small and taught by experienced, native Hungarian teachers – many of whom have taught with us or at other locations for many years. We strive to make the classes educational, culturally rewarding and fun. Our classes are normally 12 weeks during the fall and spring semesters with the potential for a shorter session in the summer. This fall, classes will begin the week of September 14 and end before the Christmas holidays. Click here to read more about our language program.

Student Donations – In order to support the program, we depend on donations from those who enroll in the classes. The donations are voluntary but without them, we could not offer the program. To this end, we ask that students contribute $300/semester for a 12-week class. Summer classes will be half that amount for a six-week class. Please note that your donations support not only the language program but also the cultural center we continue to renovate at the Kossuth House (2001 Massachusetts Ave. NW). For those that make the full suggested donation, this will also include free use of the Hungarian library during the semester.

Books – The Foundation also offers books used in most of the classes imported from the University of Pecs in Hungary. Our prices are:

Magyar-OK A1 books - $39.95 plus $2.40 DC sales tax = $42.35
Magyar-OK A2 books - $44.95 plus $2.70 DC sales tax = $47.65
Magyar-OK B1 books - $49.95 plus $3.00 DC sales tax = $52.95
Magyar-OK B2 books - $54.95 plus $3.30 DC sales tax = $58.25

Mailing costs are $5 extra or you can arrange to pick up the books in person.

Payment Methods – Payment can be by check or by credit card using PayPal. Please make checks out to “Kossuth Foundation” and mail to the Kossuth House at 2001 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20036. You may pay by credit card online at using the PayPal link found there. Please designate payment as being for the books or as a donation for the class.

Class time – Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not teaching in person until further notice. Instead, we offer classes using Zoom or Skype depending on which the teacher prefers. Each class will decide what times work best and what days of the week. Classes meet for two and a half hours, and most start at 6:30 p.m.

Orientation for New Students – We will hold a virtual meeting with the teachers on September 10 at 7:30 p.m. Access information will be sent to all new students who register by September 9. Prior to the orientation, new students will have an opportunity to talk with one of our experienced teachers to ensure that they join the appropriate level of instruction.

To sign up, please fill out the registration form by clicking here. In the form, you will provide some contact information and some background that will help us to determine which class you should be in.
